My great-grand parents, Johann Georg and Catherine Margarita (Nikkel) Wambold came to the United States from Russia in 1907. They were from the Volga German district that was populated with German settlers in the 1760s. These settlers were invited by Catherine the Great in order to tame the Russian frontier. The German settlers enjoyed certain special rights but in the late 1800s these rights began to be rescinded prompting many to emigrate. After coming to the United States the Wambold family first settled settled in Green Lake, Wisconsin and later moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
